In the 1950s and into the 1960s Los Angeles and the country felt that attacking bombers could pose a threat.  By 1958 Los Angeles had sixteen Nike Ajax missile launch sites surrounding the Los Angeles area.  Located less than 3 miles from the busy 405 freeway you will discover the remains of one of these launch sites.  San Vicente Mountain Park provides 360 degree views of  the valley, downtown Los Angeles, and even the pacific ocean.  The 10 acre park provides picnic areas, and access to the 20,000 acre "Big Wild" park.  Many hiking, biking and horse trails branch off from this scenic overlook.  San Vicente Mountain Park is a great place to learn about the cold war history of Los Angeles.

To get there exit the 405 freeway at Skirball Center Drive, Head up the hill and head west on Mulholland Drive,  Drive 2.7 miles west and continue on the dirt road.  San Vicente Mountain Park is located at the end of the dirt road or where the road ends at a fire gate.
