Happy Memorial Day!

This Memorial Day is almost over.   I hope that everyone had a very special day.  My girlfriend and I started the day off with a trip to Fort Logan National Cemetery in Colorado to watch the Memorial Day ceremony. It was a very special presentation that truly honored those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice.  This whole week felt very patriotic for us as we just got back from visiting Virginia (learning about the start of this great nation), and Washington D.C.

Today was a busy, exciting day filled with adventure (The Boulder Creek Festival in Boulder, and later a trip into the mountains above Boulder, followed by a few local brewery visits).

However, it was the ceremony at the start of the day that truly made this Memorial Day meaningful.

Remember that today is not just a day off of work, but a day to celebrate and remember those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank a veteran today and never forget those that have fallen.

Happy Memorial Day!  How did you celebrate this day?

The Sand Creek Regional Greenway, Denver, CO

The Sand Creek Regional Greenway is a 14 mile long trail system within the Denver area. The trail connects from the High Line Canal in Aurora to the South Platte River Greenway in Commerce City. It passes through Denver and the Stapleton community.

The trail features some unique sights such as:

Urban Farm at Stapleton

Sand Creek Park

Bluff Lake Nature Center

Star K Ranch Natural Area

Old Stapleton Airport runway tunnels

Morrison Nature Center

Near the Smith Road trail head is where you will find evidence of the old runway tunnels of the Stapleton airport. Next to the trail you will see a section near the creek with two large concrete walls on either side. The tops of the runway tunnels were removed, but the large concrete walls still remain.

Down the street from the Smith Road trail head near the intersection of Central Park Blvd. And Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. you can see the old control tower of the Stapleton Airport. (The tower is located off Uinta St.) It looks strange in the center of houses of the new Stapleton community.

There are some trail closures and detours because of construction for the new light rail system and repairs for the damage caused by the floods last year. It was even a little hard for me to find the trail heads because of construction. It would be a good idea to visit the Sand Creek Greenway website for updates (http://sandcreekgreenway.org/our-greenway/construction-detours/).

How to shower while camping

5/2/2014

Someone recently asked me about bathing options during camping when facilities are unavailable.

In my opinion the best options are:

Outdoor Solar Camp Shower

You will need to use the sun to heat up the solar bag. It may take a few hours, depending on the weather. Remember to have the clear side facing up. Sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate and it takes forever for the sun to heat up the water. In this case, the best option is to heat up some water on your stove and then place the water in the bag.

Nearby Creek or River

This is not the best option as the water is often cold. If you choose this option make sure to use camp soap. Camp soap is safe for the environment.

Wipes

There are many types of wipes, both large and small, that can be used to clean your body.

Italian Shower

Use deodorant or cologne to mask the smell of your stinky self. Not always the best move.

Don't Shower

If you are only camping for a weekend you may opt to just not bathe at all and shower when you get home. This is not the best option but it happens. Hopefully your friends or significant other will forgive you. However, if you are camping for longer than just a few days you really should shower.

Here are some tips when bathing outdoors:

Usually the hot water is limited or nonexistent so practice taking a 5 minute shower at home so you will be prepared.

As mentioned earlier you can heat up water using your camp stove. Just don't make it so hot that you burn yourself.

How do you shower while camping?
