Located only 140 miles east of Los Angeles; Joshua Tree is often considered to be a “Climbers Paradise”. With many strange rock formations, it is the perfect outdoor playground for anyone. Besides Bouldering or climbing, the park offers many unique camping, and hiking destinations. The park covers nearly 800,000 acres. The park is named after the Joshua Tree, a type of yucca.
Hidden Valley is the main attraction for Climbers. With many strange rock formations it may seem as if you are looking at a strange cloud discussing what the shape looks like.
Jumbo Rocks is the largest campground in the park. All campsites are open year round. This park is very popular and many campsites fill up fast. There is a $15 fee to enter the park but it is good for 7 days. Most campsites have a fee of $10-$35 a night.
On my last visit to Joshua Tree we stayed at Jumbo Rocks in site 4 and 5. Luckily I had time to review each site and it wasn’t full. I choose these two sites because the surrounding rocks provided shade.
The biggest threat to your safety in Joshua Tree is the weather. It can be extremely hot during the day and near freezing at night. Always bring plenty of water (1-2 gallons per day, per person). Make sure you have the appropriate gear for Climbing or Camping. For a great Southern California camping destination, I would recommend Joshua Tree National Park anytime of the year.
