On March 9, 1842, Francisco Lopez, took a nap under an oak tree in Placerita Canyon and had a dream that he was surrounded by gold. When he woke up he found some gold attached to some wild onions.
This was the first documented gold discovery causing a much smaller gold rush then the more known California Gold Rush that would happen six years later.
The park contains several hiking trails, a nature center, and an old ranch house.
